About Greenville SC
Greenville is the biggest city in the Greenville County of South Carolina, which also serves as the county seat. It is as well the biggest city in the Greenville – Anderson – Mauldin Metropolitan region that has the distinction of being the biggest of its kind in the state. The present site of this city was previously a Cherokee Amerindian tribe’s hunting ground, and was off limits to colonialists. However, in 1777, the treaty of Dewitt’s Corner ceded virtually all Cherokee lands including the site of the future city to South Carolina.
In 1797, Lemuel Alston moved to the area and purchased a 400 acre land, and used his holdings to found a village named Pleasantburg. Some years after the turn of the century, Vardry Mcbee bought Alston’s land. Vardry is now recognized as the father of Greenville as he donated land for numerous structures in the city including churches, a cotton mill and even academies. He and other partners funded the creation of Furman University.
In 1831, Pleasantburg was incorporated as Greenville and later on established as a city in 1869. In the recent years, Greenville has being lauded in a number of publications like CNN Money that ranked it as one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Bloomberg also ranked it at #3 of its 2010 ‘strongest job markets’ list. While Conde Nast Travellers International ranked Greenville as one of the best small cities in the US in 2017. Finally, this South Carolinian city was the 4th fastest growing city as ranked by the US Census Bureau from 2015 to 2016.
